300 children evacuated from orphanage in Sudan

THE International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported that 300 children were evacuated from the Myogoma orphanage in Sudan.

According to reports, the children had no proper access to healthcare since the fighting between the military factions escalated earlier this year.

In a statement, the protection coordinator in Sudan and part of the ICRC, Carin Naike Kohl said,

“The nannies and orphanage director were doing their best, but there were many children with medical needs. It became increasingly urgent to find them a better place where they could receive the proper and appropriate medical care that they need but also to find safety they couldn’t find in Khartoum,” Carin Naike Kohl, protection coordinator, ICRC said.

The children are headed for Wad Madani, located approximately 200 kilometers away.

Sudan declares UN envoy as persona non-grata

Meanwhile, in the latest development of the conflict in the northeastern African country, the government of Sudan has declared US envoy Volker Perthes as ‘persona non grata.’

The announcement comes weeks after the army chief accused him of worsening the conflict.

In a post on the official Twitter account of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, it said,

“The Government of the Republic of Sudan has notified the Secretary-General of the United Nations of declaring Mr. Volker Perthes, Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations and Head of the UNITAMS Mission, persona non grata, as of today’s date.”

In response, the government of Germany condemned the announcement and said that they stand fully behind Perthes and his efforts.
