Australia certain to become a Republic—Envoy

AUSTRALIAN High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Stephen Smith said it is “inevitable” Australia will become a Republic and dump Charles III as King.

The former defense and foreign affairs minister expressed his opinion months after taking the role as the new Australian high commissioner to the UK.

Before Australia became a nation, it was a collection of British colonies, with each colony having its written constitution, parliament, and laws.

These colonies later joined together to form Australia in 1901, hence, the country became a constitutional monarchy where the King is recognized as the head of the state.

The King however does not have a role in running day-to-day activities in Australia while the Governor-General serves as the King’s representative in the country.

Meanwhile, the death of Queen Elizabeth II last year revived calls for Australia to sever its ties with the British crown, a sentiment that is expected to gain some support not just in Australia but also in other Commonwealth countries.

In February, the Reserve Bank of Australia announced it will remove the British monarchy from its new $5 bill but will still feature the image of King Charles III in some coins.

King Charles III is the current monarch of fifteen Commonwealth realms including Australia.
