Australia officially bans Nazi salute, hate symbols

THE display and sale of Nazi hate symbols as well as the infamous Nazi salute are now considered a criminal offense in Australia.

The landmark legislation took effect on Monday, January 8, in response to the rising cases of hate and anti-Semitic incidents in recent months,

The measure criminalizes the sale and display of Nazi motifs including the swastika.

Additionally, the lightning bolt symbol of the SS which stands for Schutzstaffel has been banned.

The Schutzstaffel which translates to “Protection Squadron” in English refers to the personal bodyguards of Adolf Hitler and the paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party.

The deadly attack launched by Hamas in Israel on October 7 resulted in rising cases of Islam phobic and anti-Semitic incidents in Australia.

The Australian Security Intelligence previously said that neo-Nazis were among the most challenging security threats in the country.

Australia enforced the measure to combat anti-Semitism shortly after hundreds of political leaders demanded a permanent ceasefire and the diplomatic recognition of the state of Palestine.
