Australian troops to help flood-stricken residents after deadly storm

UP to 50 Australian Defence Force personnel equipped with cleaning vehicles will be deployed in Queensland to assist flood victims starting on Thursday.

The Australian troops will be assigned to remove debris and ensure that roofs are safe and ready for the restoration of electricity.

Authorities warned it could take about ten days before thousands of households will have their electricity restored.

The slow-moving rain cell had caused widespread flooding, severed access to electricity, uprooted trees, damaged houses, trapped residents, and forced thousands of them to evacuate from their homes since Christmas Day.

At least ten people died over the Christmas and New Year period as the season of celebration and cheers turned into a moment of disaster.

The impact of the storm is still evident in several areas. Thousands of households are still left in the dark while all beaches in Gold Coast are closed due to hazardous conditions.
