Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina extends term in office

BANGLADESHI Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League Party won 172 of the 225 parliamentary seats which means that she is secured for her fifth term in office.

Hasina’s win was not a surprise to many as the leading opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the general elections after thousands of its members were arrested just weeks before the vote.

BNP officials accused the prime minister of cheating in the previous election wins and weaponizing law enforcement against political rivals.

In connection, local police reported arson attacks in 10 polling stations on Friday and Saturday, with authorities blaming the BNP for the incident.

Following her win, Hasina will extend her reign as the nation’s longest-serving prime minister at age 76.
