Bong Go expresses full support for the ad interim appointments of AFP members; underscores AFP leadership’s vital role in national security

SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go, Vice Chairperson of the Senate Committee on National Defense, delivered a speech on Wednesday, December 4, during the Commission on Appointments’ deliberation on the ad interim appointments of 15 members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

In his secondment speech, Go highlighted the officers’ exemplary service and sacrifices, emphasizing their critical contributions to national security and democracy.

“These appointments are well-deserved,” Go stated, expressing his admiration for the appointees’ dedication. “Each of these fine officers has demonstrated not only skill and professionalism but also an unyielding spirit of resilience in the face of challenges in defense of our country.”

Acknowledging the officers’ steadfast commitment, Go praised their role in safeguarding the nation through times of adversity.

“You have stood steadfast in the face of adversity, sacrificing personal comfort and, at times, risking your lives to ensure that our country remains secure and for our people to enjoy the blessings of democracy. For that, we are forever grateful.”

He also commended the AFP’s involvement in disaster response and public safety.

“Kaya maraming salamat po sa inyong walang kapantay na serbisyo sa ating bansa. Mula noon hanggang ngayon—sa gitna ng pandemya, bagyo, lindol, at iba pang kalamidad, kayo ay naging mahalagang bahagi sa pagpapanatili ng kaligtasan at kapayapaan sa ating bansa.”

Go underscored how the AFP’s bravery and compassion inspire the Filipino people. “Sa bawat araw na inyong ipinaglalaban ang kaligtasan at kapayapaan ng bansa, hinding-hindi namin makakalimutan ang inyong sakripisyo at serbisyo. Ang inyong tapang at malasakit ay tunay na kahanga-hanga at nagbibigay ng pag-asa sa bawat Pilipino.”

He concluded his speech by reiterating his gratitude and recognizing the officers’ invaluable contributions. “Muli, maraming salamat po sa inyong lahat. Mabuhay po kayo!”

Go has been instrumental in pushing for several laws and programs to strengthen national security and promote the welfare of the military. During the administration of former president Rodrigo Duterte, entry-level salaries for uniformed personnel were doubled, reflecting his commitment to promoting their welfare and recognizing their sacrifices. As the then Special Assistant to the President, Go collaborated with policymakers to ensure this campaign promise was fulfilled by the former president.

Go also co-authored Republic Act No. 11549, significant legislation revising the minimum height standards for candidates applying to various law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

In line with his ongoing efforts, Go filed SBN 422, which seeks to provide free legal assistance to any armed forces and law enforcement officers facing charges arising from incidents related to the performance of official duty before the prosecutor’s office, court, or any competent body.

Acknowledging the substantial burdens carried by these uniformed individuals, Go emphasized the importance of ensuring they receive adequate legal support as long as they fulfill their mandate by the law.
