The 25th Alumni Homecoming of Pablo Lorenzo National High School (PLNHS) in Davao City became a memorable gathering on Saturday, December 27. Approximately 500 alumni members attended the event, celebrating their shared experiences and the achievements of their alma mater.
Invited as the Guest of Honor, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, who is a member of the Senate Committee on Basic Education, provided a heartfelt message emphasizing the transformative power of education in building a brighter future for the nation.
“I am honored to join you today in celebrating not only the milestones of this institution but also the lives it has shaped over the years. Education is the foundation of progress, and I commend PLNHS for its unwavering dedication to molding future leaders,” said Go.
He urged the alumni to continue supporting initiatives that empower the youth and strengthen communities, adding, “Let us all be instruments of change by nurturing the next generation through education, compassion, and unity.”
Earlier that day, Senator Go was in Taal, Batangas, where he joined the blessing of the newly constructed Integrated Rural Health Unit that will function as a Super Health Center, traveling back and forth across Luzon and Mindanao to address the needs of Filipinos. Despite his packed schedule, he made time to celebrate with the PLNHS alumni, highlighting his dedication to being present for the people he is mandated to serve and represent.
During the event, Go distributed tokens to some of the attendees such as shirts, basketballs, and volleyballs.
Senator Go highlighted significant legislative achievements aimed at making education more accessible and equitable. The recent enactment of RA 12077, or the “Student Loan Payment Moratorium During Disasters and Emergencies Act,” which he co-sponsored and co-authored, offers a crucial safety net for students during crises, ensuring that education remains within reach even in the most challenging times.
He proudly mentioned Republic Act No. 10931, the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act, signed into law by former President Rodrigo Duterte, which has significantly expanded access to higher education nationwide. Building on this success, Go co-authored and co-sponsored Senate Bill No. 1360, aiming to broaden the coverage of the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) if enacted into law.
“I firmly believe that access to quality education is a fundamental driver of change. It breaks down barriers and levels the playing field, which is why I am committed to helping ensure our educational system is accessible, affordable, and equitable for all,” Go underscored.
Additionally, Go co-authored and co-sponsored RA 11510, which institutionalizes the Alternative Learning System (ALS) to improve basic education delivery to underserved and disadvantaged students; RA 11984, or the “No Permit, No Exam Prohibition Act”, which prohibits educational institutions from denying students the right to take exams due to unpaid fees; RA 12006 or the “Free College Entrance Examinations Act”, waiving entrance exam fees at private higher educational institutions for qualified top students; as well as RA 11997, or the “Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act,” which increases the teaching supply allowances for public school teachers.
“Education breaks barriers and creates opportunities. That is why I remain committed to ensuring that our youth, regardless of their circumstances, have access to quality education,” he emphasized.
He then extended his gratitude to the alumni and organizers for their efforts in making the homecoming a success, acknowledging their collective role in contributing to the school’s legacy.
“Your success is a reflection of the values and quality education instilled by this institution. As you gather here today, I encourage you to give back to your community and continue to be ambassadors of hope and inspiration,” he said.
“Let us continue to work together for a brighter future. Bilang inyong Mr. Malasakit, patuloy akong magseserbisyo sa inyo dahil naniniwala ako na ang serbisyo sa tao ay serbisyo sa Diyos. Have a happy healthy New Year!” he concluded.
