SENATOR Christopher “Bong” Go, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Sports, has long championed the cause of Filipino athletes, providing not just policy support but direct assistance to individuals chasing their dreams. His efforts have resonated across sports arenas, from grassroots competitions to international championships, with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) serving as a vital partner in fulfilling his vision of empowering local talent.
“Ang mga atleta natin ang inspirasyon ng maraming Pilipino. Kaya dapat natin silang suportahan sa abot ng ating makakaya,” Senator Go shared.
This ethos has translated into tangible results, such as the facilitation of financial aid to aspiring athletes and their families together with the PSC. Notable beneficiaries include Ellen Avanzado, who requested assistance for her daughter, Eleora, to participate in triathlon competitions.
Beyond immediate aid, Senator Go’s work lays the groundwork for systemic change. He played a key role in the creation of the National Academy of Sports (NAS), established through Republic Act No. 11470, which he authored and co-sponsored.
Situated in New Clark City, Capas, Tarlac, NAS offers student-athletes a unique opportunity to pursue secondary education alongside a sports-centered curriculum. “Ang pagsuporta sa mga kabataang atleta ay hindi lang para sa kanila kundi para rin sa kinabukasan ng sports sa ating bansa,” Senator Go emphasized during the academy’s launch.
In addition to his efforts with NAS, Senator Go is also pushing for the institutionalization of the Philippine National Games (PNG). It seeks to strengthen a structured national sports program that not only promotes grassroots sports but also provides opportunities for aspiring athletes to compete at the national level.
In his capacity as the Senate’s sponsor of the sports budget, Senator Go has been instrumental in advocating for increased funding for athletic programs and facilities. Under his leadership, the renovation of iconic sports venues like the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila and the Philsports Arena in Pasig City became priorities, ensuring that Filipino athletes train in world-class environments. These efforts are complemented by initiatives addressing nutrition, mental health, and access to cutting-edge equipment—cornerstones of modern athletic preparation.
Senator Go remains deeply connected to individual stories of resilience and triumph. For example, PSC records show that financial assistance has reached hundreds of athletes and performers in recent years, with Senator Go personally supporting such requests.
“As I always remind our youth, get into sports, stay away from illegal drugs to keep us healthy and fit,” Go frequently reiterates, underscoring his dual mission of athletic excellence and holistic well-being.
Through his enduring commitment, Senator Go ensures that the aspirations of Filipino athletes—whether on local fields or global stages—are met with steadfast support.
“Patuloy kaming magseserbisyo sa inyo dahil bisyo ko ang magserbisyo at ako ay naniniwala na ang serbisyo sa tao ay serbisyo ‘yan sa Panginoon, serbisyo ‘yan kay Allah,” underscored Senator Go who is known as Mr. Malasakit for his compassionate service to Filipinos in need.
