Contaminated tap water may be source of ‘mysterious illness’ outbreak in Peru—Report

PERU is under national health emergency in response to the wave of the mysterious paralysis-causing illness.

Peruvian health officials suspect contaminated tap water as the source of the outbreak for upon investigations they have found a potential link to the bacteria campylobacter jejuni, commonly associated with gastroenteritis found in food and water.

Since the beginning of the year, 231 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) have been reported, with over half occurring in five weeks from early June to mid-July.

The majority of patients experience progressive paralysis starting from the feet and legs, moving upward towards the upper body.

On the other hand, the tourism sector of Peru feared that they might be affected by the spread of disease.

However, as of now, no travel restrictions have been implemented yet.

To mitigate the situation, authorities are urging the public to prioritize clean drinking water and maintain proper hygiene practices. Anyone experiencing symptoms related to GBS or similar neurological disorders is advised to seek immediate medical attention.

As of now, the Peruvian government is actively collaborating with international organizations to identify the source of contamination and prevent the further spread of the disease.

The nation remains on high alert as the cause of this mysterious paralysis-causing illness is being investigated, and the public is urged to take necessary precautions to protect their health.
