A total of 342 households and 43 individuals affected by the fire that razed more than 100 houses in Barangay Leon Garcia, Agdao last December 27 received cash assistance on Thursday, February 22.
The City Government of Davao, through the City Social Welfare Development Office, distributed P20,000 to each house-owner with totally burned homes as those with partially damaged homes received P15,000.
Renters, sharers, and caretakers were each allotted P10,000 while boarders received P5,000.
CSWDO Agdao District Head Amelee Buot said that with this amount, the fire-affected families and individuals will now have additional budget to help them rebuild and recover from the incident.
Buot cited other agencies that have also sent aid to those affected by the blaze. These include the Department of Social Welfare and Development, the Office of the Vice President, Office of Senator Bong Go, Office Senator Bato dela Rosa, the City Mayor’s Office, Office of the Congressman from the First District, city councilors, and private individuals and civil society organizations.
Venessa Torres, a Leon Garcia resident whose house was destroyed by the fire, said she and many others are still staying at the temporary shelter in Leon Garcia High School as they slowly rebuild their houses. For this reason, Torres said she is grateful for the financial assistance as she and most of her neighbors have been meaning to use the money to buy more materials to restore their homes. CIO
