Cyprus-Russia ties to survive obstacles—envoy

RUSSIAN Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov believes that longstanding ties between Russia and Cyprus are strong and can withstand any “temporary adventures.”

Zyazikov emphasized that Cyprus will always remain its friendly ties with Russia as their friendship is based on mutual feelings of affinity between their people and countries that have lasted for centuries.

“I’d like to stress that the people of Cyprus were, are, and will always remain friendly with us. These are not just words. The friendship between our two peoples is based on mutual feelings of affinity between common people, on the close historic, spiritual, and cultural relations between our two countries over centuries,” said Murat Zyazikov, Russian Ambassador to Cyprus.

Earlier this week, Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos met with the Russian ambassador to exchange views on various regional and international concerns.

The Russian envoy acknowledged that EU sanctions on Moscow, which Cyprus has supported, affected the bilateral ties between Russia and Cyprus.

Russia and Cyprus have survived more than 60 years of diplomatic ties, with a large number of Russian businesses and investments currently based in the island country.

Cyprus on the other hand benefits from Russian tourists, as well as imports of iron, metals, and timber, among others.

The Russian envoy anticipates meeting the President of Cyprus soon.
