TO promote Davao City’s creative industries, the City Government of Davao and the Department of Trade and Industry on Monday launched the ‘Creative Spaces in Public Places’ project.
Under the DTI’s Lunsod Lunsad program, the city was granted P2.8 million in funding to realize its ‘Creative Spaces in Public Places: Utilizing Recreational Parks and Facilities as Grassroots-centered Hubs for the Arts, Technology, and Innovation’ program which aims to conduct activities in public parks to support and promote local communities of the arts and the creative sector.
The project aims to transform public parks and other public spaces into a “venue for capacity building and educational workshops and classes; workspace and multidisciplinary spaces for creatives; hubs for networking and collaboration; exhibition and performance venues; and entrepreneurship and business development centers.”
More than 10,000 individuals in the Audiovisual Media, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Traditional Cultural Expressions, Publishing and Printed Media, Digital Interactive Media, and Design will take part in the program. Creative activities will be held in parks, the city library, Museo Dabawenyo and other public spaces within six months.
On Monday’s launching of the project, a cheque of P2.8 million was turned over by DTI officials to the local government led by Vice Mayor J Melchor Quitain Jr. and Acting City Administrator Atty. Francis Mark Layog.
DTI Creative Industries Program Manager Atty. Gio Franco Gomez said Davao City is among the 47 cities chosen to receive funding for their creative industries projects through DTI’s Lunsod Lunsad program. He said the Creative Spaces in Public Places project received the grant as it closely aligns with RA 11904, also known as the Philippine Creative Industries Development Act.
“The basic criteria is we want to make sure we are really reaching the creative industry players in each city,” Gomez said.
Meanwhile, Davao City Investment Promotion Center Officer III Christian Cambaya said the activities will begin in February and will run until June. CIO
