Davao City to build Davao City Public Internet Center

THE City Government of Davao is planning to establish the Davao City Public Internet Center at People’s Park.

The plan is currently in the works under the  Sangguniang Panlungsod’s Committee on Information Technology for the appropriate legislation for funds.

Councilor Bonz Andre Militar, Chair of the SP ICT Committee, during the Aprubado sa Konseho Media forum on Tuesday, disclosed the details of the planned center.

“The design was done, it was also approved by the mayor after I asked him to check, and I already asked the City Engineer’s for the cost estimate,” militar said.

He said that he was waiting for the cost estimate so the procurement plan and project design could be crafted.

Militar said that upon the advice of the Parks Board, they could not decrease the area of the park, which is why the center was designed to have two stories. They proposed to have 60 computer units placed on the second floor and six computer units on the ground floor intended for persons with disabilities.

He said that the center is an extension of the internet services of the Davao City Library and Information Center.

“We have extended this service because there are many people who want to use a computer but cannot afford it,” militar said, adding that this will be a huge help for those who want to conduct research and also make assignments.

He added that those who are living outside the city centers can book the use of the computer units in advance.

Militar said that they are pushing for the installation of a strong WiFi connection that is free and will benefit the immediate surroundings of the center.

As to the targets, Militar said that currently, the establishment of the facility is at the committee level.

“We are doing our best to push for this, we are still at the committee hearing level and we are finalizing it since we already have the go signal from the mayor that we can push this,” militar said.

He said that, hopefully, the budget for the construction of the facility will be included in the annual budget next year.
