JAPANESE prosecutors seeking the death penalty for a man behind one of the deadliest Arson attacks in the country’s history may soon get the justice they’re aiming for.
Shinji Aoba admitted at the Kyoto District Court of starting the fire that ripped through the studios of Kyoto Animation in July 2019 and killed 36 people.
The 45-year-old defendant nearly died himself as he suffered 90 percent burns and needed 12 operations after committing the crime.
He faces five charges including murder, attempted murder and arson.
According to prosecutors, the suspect claimed Kyoto Animation stole his ideas but the company has denied the allegation.
Although he admitted of committing the act, his lawyers have entered a plea of not guilty due to mental illness.
The crime was considered the deadliest arson attack in Japan in decades which sent shockwaves to the film and TV cartoon industry.
