Debunking all issues about the book “Isang Kaibigan” by VP Inday Sara Duterte

THE book titled “Isang Kaibigan,” authored by Vice President Sara Duterte, has recently come under scrutiny from certain groups, primarily due to allegations of political undertones. These criticisms, however, seem to stem from a politicized agenda rather than an objective assessment of the book’s content.

For those unfamiliar with the book, it may appear to be an unnecessary expenditure. However, a comprehensive understanding of its purpose reveals the book’s true value and intent.

The narrative is inspired by Vice President Duterte’s personal experiences and highlights the essence of genuine friendship. The story follows the characters Kwago (an owl) and Loro (a parrot), showcasing how true friendship can triumph over significant adversities, such as natural disasters—exemplified by Loro helping Kwago rebuild his home after a typhoon.

During her tenure as DepEd Secretary, VP Sara initiated various projects in collaboration with the Office of the Vice President (OVP) that align with the Department of Education (DepEd) objectives. Programs such as the “You Can be VP Program” and “PanSarap Program” specifically target DepEd students— reinforcing the synergy between these offices.

The book launch coincided with the “Buwan at Araw ng Pagbasa” celebration, a significant period in promoting reading and literacy. Importantly, the launch was lawful and not imposed on the public and the allocation of any budget is a matter for Congressional approval.

VP Sara proposes, the Congress approves. So, what’s the fuss?

The book also complements DepEd’s MATATAG Agenda, particularly the “Catch-up Fridays” initiative. This initiative, part of a broader National Learning Recovery Program, focuses on enhancing literacy among students and includes activities like the “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) Day. Hence, the “Isang Kaibigan” serves as an educational tool within these programs.

The concerns about the allocation of taxpayers’ money are unfounded. The funding for the book is directly linked to DepEd’s literacy programs, which are designed to benefit students and pupils. Additionally, VPSD has spearheaded the “Share a Book Drive,” encouraging donations of storybooks to schools and DepEd offices, furthering efforts to improve literacy. Moreover, “Book buddy sessions” and “reading pantries” were also established. These were not only events, these were trends in enhancing the literacy skills of DepEd learners.

In contrast, the budget allocated for this initiative is modest. For instance, the cost of the book publication is significantly lower than the ₱24 million spent on the “Bagong Pilipinas Kick-Off Concert” or the billions allocated for flood control projects that often only reach the feasibility study stage as per NEDA. Therefore, criticisms regarding the book’s funding should be viewed in context with these larger expenditures.

Those who are saying that this is a waste of taxpayers’ money yet so silent about the 4.5 Billion intelligence fund of Bongbong Marcos, the millions of money spent in Senate Hearing about Alice Guo and Quiboloy headed by Senator Risa Hontiveros— which failed big time, and the billions of money spent for ayuda, are simply hating VP Sara and parroting a shallow narrative produced by their trapo idols.

The “Isang Kaibigan” book, far from being a misuse of funds, represents a targeted effort to enhance the literacy and educational experience of Filipino students, aligning with the broader goals of the DepEd and the OVP. Only those who are intelligent enough would understand. The rest, ill-informed.
