Diarrhea outbreak affects dozens in Phuket

MORE than 70 people were rushed to public and private hospitals across Phuket after widespread discomfort hit the affected individuals this week.

The Phuket Provincial Public Health Office suspected that the stomach bug was possibly caused by the notorious norovirus which managed to infiltrate the local water supply.

Norovirus, also known as the winter vomiting disease, is the most common cause of gastroenteritis, with infection symptoms characterized by non-bloody diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain as well fever or headaches.

Authorities believe the affected individuals consumed water and ice contaminated by the virus which led to widespread discomfort.

Health authorities urged locals and tourists to consume only freshly cooked food and to frequently wash their hands as the virus can be transmitted through the consumption of food and drink as well as inhaling them.

Several schools were closed and disinfected while authorities investigated some of the drinking water and ice factories in the province but no virus was detected.
