THE Department of Justice (DOJ) said that they are actively implementing reforms to fortify the criminal justice system and enhance the promotion and protection of human rights.
This is inorder to achieve Secretary Boying Remulla’s vision of a 100% EJK-free Philippines.
In a statement, the Department of Justice assures that they are steadfast in the mission to uphold the rule of law and unequivocally denounce baseless branding extra-judicial killings.
Sec. Remulla said that to change the mindset and attitude of eering law enforcers is part of the reforms.
“We guarantee that reforms are in place to change the mindset and attitude of erring law enforcers and make them responsible for their actions. We are taking all the necessary steps to strengthen the criminal justice system and hold to account the perpetrators of these violations,” according to Sec. Jesus Crispin Remulla.
The DOJ said that their dedication to safeguarding human rights from all forms of abuse is evidenced by numerous accolades, including the establishment of the Human Rights Office and the implementation of the UN Joint Programme for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Philippines.
International forums like the Geneva United Nations Human Rights Commission, the DOJ has reaffirmed its commitment to prosecuting EJK cases with integrity and objectivity, urging victims and witnesses to come forward and assist in putting an end to these heinous acts.
The DOJ however welcomes feedback and critique from international partners, recognizing their role in enhancing the Department’s operations.
The DOJ ensures the public that it is actively monitoring the human rights landscape in the country and diligently investigating reported EJK cases.
Reported EJKs under Marcos admin linked to personal motives—DOJ
Following a thorough inquiry, the DOJ Review Panel has concluded that reported EJKs under the Marcos Admin were linked to personal motives and not to the freedom of expression.
The agency said it is crucial to distinguish between killings related to legitimate law enforcement activities and true EJK incidents.
“The DOJ Review Panel has concluded that reported EJKs under the current administration were not linked to the exercise of freedom of expression but rather to personal motives.
