DPWH-BOE provides new equipment for bridge inspections

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) – Bureau of Equipment has provided the Nueva Ecija 2nd District Engineering Office (DEO) with a truck-mounted bridge inspection vehicle to assist in comprehensive assessments of bridge structures within its jurisdiction.

Nueva Ecija Area Equipment Engineer Edwin Lopez stated that the deployment of this equipment was directed by BOE Director Toribio Noel Ilao following recent reports of damage to the Labi Bridge in Bongabon and the Gen. Luna Bridge in Cabanatuan City.

“In evaluating bridge conditions, we must ensure detailed checks while prioritizing the safety of our inspection teams. This equipment will enhance our ability to inspect bridge conditions with minimal risk,” Lopez explained.

District Engineer Elpidio Trinidad noted that identifying issues or deficiencies early allows for prompt repairs or maintenance, which upholds safety standards and provides reliable service to the public.

Meanwhile, Engr. May Ann Carlos, Bridge Management System (BMS) Coordinator of the Nueva Ecija 2nd DEO, reported the completion of an inspection of the old Gen. Luna Bridge on June 13, 2024, using the new equipment and added that they have also started assessing the Dona Josefa Bridge in Gapan City.

Carlos also emphasized that regular use of damaged bridges can accelerate deterioration, potentially requiring frequent repairs and posing safety hazards for motorists.

To address these challenges, the DPWH Bridge Program has been implementing various projects.

Rapid deterioration of bridge structures due to overloading, wear and tear, and traffic volume has led to the construction of the Cabu Parallel Bridge in Cabanatuan City and the ongoing rehabilitation of the Santa Rosa Bridge in Santa Rosa, both part of this program.# (DPWH NUEVA ECIJA 2ND DPAIU)
