Ecuador’s youngest Mayor Brigitte Garcia shot dead

THE youngest mayor of Ecuador, Brigitte Garcia, was found dead in San Vicente Town, where she won the mayoral polls.

Garcia and her staffer, communications director Jairo Loor, was found inside a car with marks of bullets in her body on Sunday morning.

The 27-year-old mayor of Manabi was a member of the lefting-wing political party Citizen Revolution— the same party as Former President Rafael Correa.

Correa, released a statement labelling Garcia’s death as murder on the social media platform.

Garcia is the latest political figures in Ecuador that was killed following the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio in August last year.

Villavicencio, a staunch critic of corruption and organized crime, was killed as he left a campaign event two weeks before the elections.

And in July last year, Agustin Intriago, mayor of Manta, was murdered while touring a construction site.

The killing of Mayor Garcia comes while Ecuador is under a state of internal conflict as declared by President Daniel Noboa due to the alarming source of violence caused by gangs in the country.
