Egypt, Turkiye inch closer to end rift

TOP diplomats from Turkiye and Egypt showed the world that their respective countries are ready to mend ties and put years of tensions behind them.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry and His Turkish Counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu met in Ankara amid efforts to settle their differences and re-establish full diplomatic relations.

A couple of years ago, at the height of simmering tensions and waves of anti-government protests that rocked the Arab world, such a move was perceived as unimaginable.

In 2013, Cairo and Ankara severed diplomatic ties after Egypt’s current President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi led a military coup to overthrow Turkiye’s ally and Islamist Leader Mohammed Morsi.

Meanwhile, Shoukry’s visit to Ankara on Thursday marked a new beginning for both countries.

During their meeting, both foreign ministers agreed to cooperate more closely regarding Libya and look forward to breakpoint ambassadors.

Tensions between them softened further after Shoukry traveled to the Turkish City of Mersin in a show of solidarity after the devastating earthquakes that killed tens of thousands of people in Turkiye.
