Ex-PM to return to Thailand this day

FORMER Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the founder of Thailand Populist Pheu Thai Party, will attempt to come back to the country this day after postponing his scheduled trip earlier this month.

The 74-year-old billionaire is set to return home on Tuesday.

Her daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra will pick him up at the airport.

Thaksin delayed his scheduled trip to Thailand earlier this month citing medical reasons.

He was overthrown in a military coup on the September 19, 2006 and has lived in self-imposed exile since 2008.

Thaksin faces three outstanding charges with a total of 12-year jail sentence while the police previously warned to meet her with arrest warrants once he returns to the country.

His daughter Paetongtarn, who is one of the three prime ministerial candidates of the Pheu Thai Party, stepped back from her candidacy to give way for property tycoon Srettha Thavisin.

His return coincides the day when key parliament will vote whether to approve Srettha as Prime Minister, who needs to muster a majority votes of the Lower House of 500 elected MPs, and the 250-member Senate.

Thailand is still waiting to elect its 30th Prime Minister more than three months after the general elections in May.
