FINLAND’s new president will lead the country under a six-year term.
The President of Finland is tasked to lead foreign and security policy, acts as a commander-in-chief of the Finnish Defense Forces, appoints and discharges ministers and some high-ranking civil servants, as well as represent the country during NATO meetings.
Almost 1.9 million Finns representing about 44 percent of eligible voters have cast their ballots in advance.
Finland could hold a second round of elections on Sunday, February 11, 2024, if a new president will not be declared after January 28.
Finland, together with its Nordic neighbor Sweden, applied to join NATO on May 18, 2022 and was formally declared its 31st member on April 4, 2023.
