FORMER Senator Heherson Alvarez has succumbed to coronavirus at the age of 80.
This was confirmed by son Hexilon earlier today.
According to reports, the former senator and his wife Cecile, contracted COVID-19 last March and was in “critical condition.”
Alvarez also previously served as congressman of Isabela Province. He also headed the Department of Agrarian Reform and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources simultaneously, before retiring from public service.
Meanwhile, incumbent senators expressed great loss over the passing of Alvarez.
Senate President Tito Sotto, majority floor leader Juan Miguel Zubiri, and Senate pro-tempore Ralph Recto recalled their memories with Alvarez.
Recto remembers Alvarez of having a soft heart for the common people and spent a lifetime championing their rights and freedom, and at one time paying dearly for the courage of his convictions.
For Zubiri, he is we will sponsor and adopt a Senate Resolution to honor Alvarez, stressing the environmentalist and climate change advocate should never be forgotten.
Sotto Meanwhile said that His Alvarez’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of the people, and his name will forever be etched in our country’s rich history.
