Germany recalls Ambassador in Moscow over alleged cyberattacks by Russian hackers

THE Foreign Ministry of Germany decided to call back German Ambassador Alexander Lambsdorff from the Russian capital for consultations in Berlin.

This came after Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock last week accused Russian cyber espionage group APT28 of orchestrating the wave of cyber attacks against government officials and military databases in Germany last year.

According to Baerbock, the hacking group also known as Fancy Bear is controlled by the Russian military intelligence service GRU.

The group allegedly linked to numerous cyberattacks worldwide has compromised email accounts belonging to executives of Germany’s Social Democratic Party.

The Foreign Office in Berlin said they are taking the matter seriously.

The German ambassador will return to Russia after a week of consultations.
