Germany’s first deaf lawmaker receives warm welcome in parliament

FIRST deaf lawmaker receives warm welcome in parliament on Germany.

Heike Heubach was welcomed with applause, smiles, and waving hands as a new member of the German parliament’s lower house this week.

She replaced Uli Grötsch, a fellow member of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left Social Democrats from Bavaria.

This recent appointment is historic as it made Heike Heubach the first deaf lawmaker in the history of the German parliament.

House Speaker Bärbel Bas described her appointment as a significant milestone, and she will work for her constituents like any other lawmaker.

Heike Heubach is 44 years old and previously worked as an industrial manager before entering the world of politics. She will have a fixed place in the plenary hall, with interpreters located near her to interpret speeches and her questions.
