AN additional 100 firefighters traveled to the Greek Region of Evros to stop a forest blaze that has killed more than 20 people in the past two weeks.
Authorities described the deadly blazes as “the largest wildfire ever recorded in the EU”.
The European Union (EU) sent eleven airplanes and one helicopter to help more than 400 firefighters tackle the massive blazes in Northern Greece.
Greek authorities sent an additional 100 firefighters on Thursday, August 31, with more than 500 of them currently joining efforts to stop the fire.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis blamed climate change and a protracted heat wave followed by powerful winds as the cause of the massive blaze.
The Prime Minister defended his government’s response to the fires and warned to arrest suspected migrants who might have intentionally started the fire.
The raging inferno started on August 19.
Greek authorities rescued 25 migrants trapped in the deadly wildfire earlier this week.
