Heavy rains in South Korea claims at least 40 lives

PRESIDENT Yoon Suk-yeol has ordered an all-out rescue and recovery effort while on an overseas trip as the death toll from the flooding and landslides in South Korea continued to increase.

8,852 people from 14 cities in South Korea were immediately evacuated, following severe flooding.

The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure headquarters says more dead are recorded in the Southeast of North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea due to a sudden landslide.

According to Kim Chun-Ja, a resident of Yeachon, five people died in their area and many have lost their homes.

 “Five people are dead and other people don’t have a place to live. We’re gathering here because we have to eat, and we have to sleep.”

And according to Kim Ik-gyun, another resident of Yeachon,

“I don’t feel good. I feel like death. I force myself to walk. I force myself to eat. And I force myself to live.”

Aside from the terrifying event caused by the heavy downpour of rain, there was also extensive damage to the infrastructure.

At the moment, rescue teams are still continuing their efforts to search for missing victims. This, was as President Yoon Suk-yeol wrapped up his trip to Europe.
