SEVERAL banks and related agencies in Thailand were summoned after being linked to the alleged funding to export weapons to Myanmar.
Move Forward party-list MP Rangsiman Rome, who served as the committee chairman, cited a United Nations (UN) report that showed the connection of Thai banks to the procurement of weapons used by Myanmar’s military junta.
The lawmaker argued that the export of weapons resulted in many casualties in Myanmar and the influx of refugees to Thailand.
He added that more than 250 companies, including some from Thailand, were linked to the military procurement and violence in Myanmar over the past year.
Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, was also present during the probe.
Meanwhile, the ongoing conflict urged Thai companies to stop operations in Myanmar. The pullout represents a loss of 50 projects and an investment value of $7.1-B.
Fighting between Myanmar’s military junta and opposition forces escalated in recent weeks, with millions of people forced to flee, towns and villages turned into rubbles, and thousands to have died from the raging war.
