Iran FM visits Pakistan after mutual airstrikes

THE foreign minister of Iran visited Pakistan as both sides agreed to ease tensions following an exchange of missile strikes in the past two weeks.

Pakistani officials warmly welcomed Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian as he arrived at the Nur Khan airbase on Monday.

Amirabdollahian’s visit marked a willingness to calm tensions heightened by the war in Gaza.

The Iranian foreign minister held talks with his Pakistani counterpart Jalil Abbas Jilani.

Both foreign ministers agreed to expand security cooperation as well as strengthen trade and economic ties.

Tensions started after Iran launched a missile and drone attack against the armed group Jaish al-Adl in Pakistan’s southwestern border province of Balochistan earlier this month which killed two people.

The Islamic Republic blamed the group as the mastermind of several bomb attacks and kidnappings in southeastern Iran, targeting both civilians and security forces.

In less than 48 hours, Pakistan retaliated by targeting armed groups inside Iran’s territory which killed nine people. The tit-for-tat attacks resulted in the withdrawal of ambassadors from their respective capitals.

Ambassadors who have been recalled at the height of conflict returned to their respective posts after tensions eased.
