Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, met with Hamas representatives in Moscow, as part of Russia’s effort to mediate in the Israel-Hamas war.
The discussions centered on achieving a ceasefire, ending the Gaza blockade, and providing humanitarian aid. Hamas expressed gratitude for Iran’s support.
Iranian state media, IRNA news agency, said that Hamas’ representative Moussa Abu Marzouk told Begheri Khani that he appreciated the support of Iran for Palestine.
Meanwhile, Russia, despite its involvement in Ukraine, said it aims to mediate the conflict and assert its impartiality.
Israel criticized Russia’s invitation to Hamas, Israeli Foreign Ministry slammed Russia’s decision to invite Hamas representatives to Moscow, saying that the move was an act of support of terrorism. The ministry also called for the delegation to be expelled from Russia.
Kremlin defended the move, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov saying that Russia believes it necessary to maintain contacts with all parties.
Meanwhile, it is still unclear if the representatives from Iran, Hamas, and Russia, all met together on Thursday.
The talks signify Russia’s ambition to be a diplomatic player in the Middle East, with potential implications for the region’s dynamics.
To recall, Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that his country could act as a mediator due to its friendly ties with both Israel and the Palestinians.
