Japan partners with U.S., South Korea for 45 billion yen joint chip project

JAPAN will contribute at least 45 billion yen for the research and development of semiconductors that allow high-speed data processing with lower power consumption.

Japanese telecommunications giant NTT will partner with chipmaker Intel and its South Korean counterpart SK Hynix for the multimillion-dollar project.

The project aims to transmit information faster than electrical signals and help reduce power consumption by 30 to 40 percent.

Experts believe the technology will be a game changer since the expansion of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies resulted in semiconductor research and development processing huge amounts of data.

Japan aims to gain a stronger presence in the semiconductor industry amid China’s growing influence in the sector due to its large market demand. and a huge number of trained engineers.
