Japan’s defense, foreign ministers to meet Philippine counterparts in Manila

A two plus two foreign and defense ministerial meeting between the Philippines and Japan is set to take place on the 8th of July.

Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa and Defense Minister Minoru Kihara will sit down for talks with their Philippine counterparts, Enrique Manalo and Gilberto Teodoro Jr., more than a week from now in Manila.

Bilateral as well as defense and security issues in the region in the face of recent tensions with China are expected to dominate the talks.

Philippines and Japan have been negotiating a reciprocal access agreement (RAA) that would allow their respective militaries to visit each other’s soil, with a key defense pact expected to be signed during the talks.

The meeting serves as the highest consultative mechanism between the Philippines and Japan which started in Tokyo in 2022.
