A week after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a reshuffle in his cabinet, he and wife Sophie announced on social media their separation, marking the end of 18 years of their marriage.
The unexpected announcement comes after “meaningful and difficult conversations”, according to similar posts from the now separated couple.
“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build,” Trudeau’s post reads.
It can be noted that Sophie, a former model and TV host, has played a less visible role in recent years and has rarely traveled with the prime minister on official trips.
And following the announcement, Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau will no longer take part in official duties.
This also means that the Canadian government will no longer assist in arranging her own appearances.
The development is one of the biggest crises for Trudeau since he became prime minister in 2015, especially since he often stressed the importance of family life.
The pair have known each other since they were little and got married in May 28, 2005.
Together, they have 3 children: 15-year-old Xavier, 14-year-old Ella-Grace, and 9-year-old Hadrien.
Reports say that the prime minister will continue to live at Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, where he has lived since 2015, and the children will primarily live there to maintain stability.
Meanwhile, Sophie has moved to a separate home in the city, but will spend time at Rideau Cottage at times including when the prime minister is travelling.
In a statement from Justin Trudeau’s office, they will remain a close family, and Sophie and the prime minister are focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving and collaborative environment.
The family is expected to be together on vacation next week.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister’s Office requested respect for their privacy.
