THE foreign ministers of Kuwait and Iran held talks in an attempt to end border demarcation and joint oil field disputes.
Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah paid an official visit to Iraq’s capital Baghdad to solve the border demarcation issue between the two countries.
The United Nations established the land and maritime borders between the neighboring states in 1993 or three years after Iraq invaded Kuwait.
The maritime border remains an area of contention between Kuwait and Iraq, wherein Baghdad insists on unhindered access to Gulf waters, a lifeline for its economy and oil exports. As a result, Kuwaiti coastguards regularly detain Iraqi fishermen and seize their vessels for entering Kuwait’s territorial waters “illegally”.
A legal committee focused on resolving the border demarcation issue will be held in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on August 14.
On Wednesday, Kuwait marks the 30th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion which took place on August 2, 1990. The invasion however lasted only for seven months.
