Marcos Jr.’s 3rd SONA falls short on achievements—political analyst

PRESIDENT Bongbong Marcos’ third State of the Nation Address (SONA) reportedly lacked substance, and falls short when it comes to achievements, according to a political analyst.

“His SONA lacked substance regarding the achievements of his administration over the last two years. When it comes to achievements, it was not very substantial,” according to Prof. Anna Malindog-Uy, Political Analyst.

This is the assessment of political analyst Professor Anna Malindog-Uy on Bongbong Marcos Jr.’s third SONA, delivered on Monday, July 22.

The professor noted that Marcos Jr. did not emphasize pressing national concerns in his SONA, such as economic recovery and poverty issues.

“He didn’t say much about how he would address the issue of inflation, the need for higher wages, decreasing purchasing power, and the lack of jobs,” said Prof. Anna Malindog-Uy.

For Malindog-Uy, Marcos Jr. did not present clear solutions to address poverty.

Although the President mentioned distributing aid to the people, Malindog-Uy argued that this is not a solution to poverty.

Political analyst points out ‘misleading’ statement of Marcos Jr. about West PH Sea

Meanwhile, Malindog-Uy criticized Marcos Jr.’s comments on the West Philippine Sea (WPS), describing them as misleading and a form of political grandstanding.

“We continuously try to find ways to de-escalate tensions in contested areas with our counterparts, without compromising our position and our principles,” stated PBBM.

“The West Philippine Sea is not just our imagination. It is ours. And it will remain ours as long as the spirit of our beloved country, the Philippines, continuous to burn,” PBBM added.

Marcos’s statements were met with applause.

However, according to the political analyst, the President’s remarks could create confusion and potentially escalate tensions in the WPS.

“That was a very misleading statement from the president because West Philippine Sea is not ours, it is disputed and being claim by other claimant state. Actually, Vietnam or probable China will react,” explained Malindog-Uy.

“You de-escalate tension and yet you claim that the WPS which is one part of South China being claimed by two strongest claimants, you’re saying “that’s ours”. Are you de-escalating tension or creating a new tension?” she added.
