Massive wildfire with 80 feet high flames rages out of control in Athens, spreads ‘like lightning’

HUNDREDS of firefighters, backed by over 30 water-dropping planes, are battling the out-of-control wildfire on the northern outskirts of Athens. The fire, which started on Sunday afternoon, is being fueled by strong winds and is tearing through pine forests left tinder-dry by repeated heat waves and an exceptionally dry winter.

Smoke from the blaze has spread as far as 300 kilometers south of Attica, according to Greek scientists using satellite data.

In response to the advancing flames, Greek authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 30,000 residents in the historic town of Marathon on Sunday.

Marathon, known as the birthplace of the iconic Marathon race, lies in the northeastern Attica region, now under severe threat from the fast-moving wildfire. Residents were directed to move towards the nearby beach town of Nea Makri, following the evacuation of six settlements in the area.

Meanwhile, several European nations, including Italy, France, Romania, the Czech Republic, Türkiye, and Serbia, have responded to Greece’s call for help, deploying personnel, fire engines, water-dropping aircraft, and helicopters to assist in the fight.

With a prolonged drought and record-breaking temperatures, Greece is bracing for what could be its hottest summer yet. Authorities continue to urge residents in affected areas to stay vigilant as the firefighting efforts continue.
