MEXICO is set to file a complaint against Ecuador to the Hague’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) following the recent embassy raid in Quito.
In a press conference, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena condemned Ecuador’s actions as clear violations of the Vienna Convention.
“They are clear violations of the Vienna Convention, and that is why the violent aggression is what we are taking to the international court,” said Alicia Barcena, Foreign Minister, Mexico.
President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador emphasized Mexico’s determination to prevent such incidents in the future.
“What is sought is that there is no repetition of a despicable act such as the one suffered and experienced by Mexico and especially its diplomatic representation,” according to Pres. Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, Mexico.
The diplomatic rift deepened after the Ecuadorian police forcibly entered the Mexican embassy to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had sought asylum in Mexico, leading to the latter suspending its ties with Quito.
Several Latin American countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, and Venezuela, have condemned Ecuador’s actions.
While Nicaragua severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador.
Mexico has also called for Ecuador’s suspension from the united nations if it does not apologize for breaching the Mexican embassy.
Ecuador accuses Mexico of violating int’l law for granting asylum to ex-VP Glas
On the other hand, Ecuador argued that Mexico’s decision to grant asylum to Glas violates international laws prohibiting asylum for individuals facing criminal charges.
Amid the deepening diplomatic rift, the respective governments of the two nations have since said it is open to repairing their ties.
But is there any hope for both countries to restore their relations?
Experts believe that the hope for the two nations to reconcile in a short period of time seems slim, especially as Ecuador and Mexico will both hold general elections soon.
Hope for Mexico, Ecuador to restore ties in short term seems slim—experts
“It will take a long time for the two counties to resolve the issue. We hope all the parties concerned can join forces to help the two countries to mend their ties. It’s difficult to resolve the contradiction, but it must be resolved through peaceful means. The United Nations, the organization of American states and other international organizations have all called for a peaceful solution to the diplomatic crisis,” Washington Andrade, International Relations Expert said.
“Violating international law diminishes a country’s attractiveness for foreign investment and damages its reputation as it shows no seriousness about its commitments in the international community,” Luis Altamirano, Political and Security Analyst said.
Ecuadorian ex-VP Glas remains in jail despite illegal arrest—court
Meanwhile, ex Vice President Horhe Glas is currently behind bars in Ecuador.
He had been convicted twice of corruption and is now facing new charges.
A tribunal in the country recently ruled his arrest as illegal and arbitrary, still, the ex-vice president will remain in jail due to his previous convictions, on the other hand, Glas’s lawyer, Sonia Vera, said they will appeal the ruling.
“[ex-VP] Jorge is still detained. We’ll appeal until he is free,” Atty. Sonia Vera, Lawyer of Ex-VP Jorge Glas stated.
Reports emerged that Glas attempted suicide and was on a hunger strike in prison, which was later confirmed by his camp.
