MOVE Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat believes his party and fellow coalition partners will reach the agreements required to form a new government when they hold talks on Sunday.
Move Forward and Pheu Thai have been competing for weeks now over the coveted House speakership role as both sides make efforts to soothe their differences despite tensions.
However, time is almost up as Parliament is due to convene on Monday with the vote for the speakership role scheduled for Tuesday.
Move Forward has already named a candidate and said it would stand by its position.
On Thursday evening, the coalition met at the Move Forward Party’s headquarters to discuss alternative plans in case Pita fails to get enough support from senators in a prime ministerial vote.
Under the agreement, Move Forward will step aside and let Pheu Thai Party take the lead in forming the new government in case Pita failed to get the necessary votes.
In exchange, Pheu Thai would not compete with the MFP for the House speakership role and instead would be satisfied to get two deputy speakers roles.
Prime ministerial candidate Paetongtarn Shinawatra of the Pheu Thai party, and the daughter of Thailand’s former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who got toppled by a military coup, is one of the strongest best who could replace Pita in case he failed to get the role of a prime minister.
Meanwhile, Pita earlier today accepted an invitation from the Tourism Council of Thailand to become its brand ambassador, and assured he will promote Thailand as a destination during his travel overseas to meet foreign leaders after he assumed office.
