Myanmar, Bangladesh move on after devastating cyclone

RECOVERY efforts were underway after Cyclone Mocha smashed the coastlines of Bangladesh and Myanmar which caused widespread destruction to both countries.

The cyclone killed at least 21 people, with hundreds of others believed missing.

Myanmar took the brunt of Cyclone Mocha on Sunday while Bangladesh narrowly escaped massive damage.

The powerful cyclone smashed into Myanmar’s western states and regions, with gusts as strong as 250km per hour, while the strong winds and heavy rain remained in some areas the day after.

Officials prepared for the worst after it was initially predicted that the extremely severe cyclone will hit a Rohingya refugee camp complex located in Cox’s Bazar district in Bangladesh.

The refugee camp is said to be the largest in the world and houses nearly one million Rohingyas.

Cyclone Mocha triggered massive evacuation efforts in both countries.

Both countries are now in the phase of recovery which include rehabilitating severely affected residents, and repairing and reconstructing whatever was left of the destructive cyclone.

Now that the storm has already passed, officials are currently focused on evaluating the actual extent of damage caused by Cyclone Mocha in both countries.
