Nearly 90K Filipino workers abroad lost their jobs due to COVID-19 crisis

ABOUT 90, 000 overseas Filipino workers have lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

According to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office, 89, 436 overseas Filipino workers did not receive salaries or lost their jobs in different parts of the world.

 

According to DOLE, more than 200, 000 OFWs are seeking assistance in their AKAP Program where each OFW is targeted to be given P10, 000.

 

This is higher than the target of 150, 000 Pinoy workers abroad to be helped under the DOLE’s AKAP Program.

 

Meanwhile, the number of OFWs positive for COVID-19 increased.

 

According to data released by the Department of Foreign Affairs on April 26, up to 1, 343 Filipino workers abroad have been infected with the disease in 44 countries.

 

Of this data, 827 of these were treated continuously in various hospitals.

 

A total of 331 were recovered or discharged and 185 were killed.

 

Europe remained at the highest COVID-19 positive rate among OFWS reaching 418 while the highest number of OFWs killed is in the United States with 106 recorded.
