Nord Stream pipeline leak boosts Sweden’s emissions in 2023

THE three underwater explosions in September 2022 emitted up to 500,000 tons of methane, with a whopping 5.8-M tons of climate pollution spilled within Sweden’s territory, and some in Denmark.

Russia has blamed the United States and its Western allies for the sabotage of natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The West for its part blamed Kremlin for the explosions in the undersea pipeline. Without the leak, Sweden’s climate emissions would have actually been down 5% from 2021 levels instead of 7%.

Methane, a powerful greenhouse gas,  is 80 times more harmful than carbon dioxide for 20 years after it is released.

More than a tear from the incident, it remains unclear who was behind the sabotage.
