PCG recovers two bodies, five still missing after MV Hong Hai 16 capsizing

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), in coordination with partner agencies, has recovered two bodies from the sunken MV Hong Hai 16 off the coast of Barangay Malawaan, Rizal, Occidental Mindoro. The sand carrier capsized approximately 100 meters from shore, prompting an urgent and ongoing search and retrieval operation.

During successive dives conducted earlier today, one body was found in the accommodation area around 2:10 PM, while another was discovered in Cargo Hold No. 1 at approximately 3:28 PM. These recoveries reduce the number of missing crew members from seven to five.

Aside from the search and retrieval mission, PCG divers have also recovered vessel documents and personal belongings, which are aiding in the investigation and identification process. As of now, the identities of the two recovered individuals are still being confirmed.

In terms of environmental impact, no significant threat has been identified at this time. Water sampling, conducted in partnership with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB), has been sent for laboratory analysis to ensure continued environmental safety in the area.

A professional salvor contracted by the vessel’s owner is expected to begin salvage operations upon the arrival of specialized equipment by Monday, April 21, 2025. The PCG assures the public that updates will be provided as the situation continues to unfold.
