AT the DOT Year-End Media Briefing on Tuesday (Dec. 17), Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco highlighted the remarkable performance of Philippine tourism.
The sector contributed P3.36 trillion to the economy, accounting for 8.6% of the GDP, a significant leap from 5.1% in 2020.
Tourism employment continued to thrive, generating 6.21 million jobs, or 12.9% of total national employment, while the Tourism Direct Gross Value Added (TDGVA) surged to P2.08 trillion, reflecting a strong 47.9% growth rate. The industry also posted a net trade surplus in travel services of USD 2.45 billion, the highest in 15 years, according to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Secretary Frasco urged a broader perspective in evaluating the tourism sector’s success, emphasizing the importance of visitor receipts, tourism spending, length of stay, and employment as key indicators of performance. The tourism chief noted that while it has been customary to focus solely on arrivals and compare with competitors, these numbers provide a clearer picture of tourism’s true impact on the economy and people.
