PM of Solomon Islands ‘appalled’ by Japan on Fukushima wastewater discharge

THE Prime Minister of Solomon Islands said he was appalled at Japan’s move to release the Fukushima wastewater and warned of the effects of it on the southern Pacific archipelago.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made the remarks during his speech at the U.N. General Assembly.

To recall, Japan started discharging the treated radioactive nuclear wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean on August 24.

Japan insists that the discharge is safe because of the backing of the UN nuclear watchdog and western countries including the United States.

But neighboring countries, including China, and the Solomon Islands, Opposed Japan’s unilateral decision to discharge the wastewater.

China has banned all Japanese seafood imports, while civic groups and opposition leaders in South Korea opposed the discharge.

Even South Korea’s Former President, Moon Jae-In, voiced his opposition to the discharge and believes that the government of President Yoon Suk Yeol is doing the wrong thing.
