Pres. Marcos directs MARINA to standardize maritime practices with global standards

PRESIDENT Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. has issued a directive to the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) to standardize the maritime sector in the Philippines to ensure the country’s compliance with international standards.

The directive was given during a meeting led by President Marcos concerning the Maritime Industry Development Plan (MIDP) 2028 at Malacañang Palace on January 17.

The meeting discussed solutions to the challenges facing the industry, including legislative reforms and additional investments for its development.

During the meeting, President Marcos stated that standardizing operations in the maritime industry is the first step toward implementing reforms in the sector.

Meanwhile, MARINA Administrator Sonia Malaluan sought the president’s approval for the updated MIDP 2028.

This plan aims to establish a strong and reliable Philippine merchant fleet, addressing the country’s sea requirements in support of the national development agenda.

Its key programs include the modernization and expansion of domestic shipping in the Philippines, the promotion and expansion of Philippine overseas shipping, the modernization of the Philippine shipbuilding and ship repair industry, and the promotion of a highly skilled and competitive maritime workforce.

However, President Marcos noted that many policies and operations in the maritime industry are no longer effective due to the lack of a unified system.

Marcos also stressed the need for a standardized system in accordance with international standards before implementing the proposed programs.

Meanwhile, President Marcos revealed that the government is currently finalizing the MIDP 2028, ensuring that the welfare of Filipino mariners is a priority.

Upon its immediate completion, the Malacañang guaranteed the effective implementation of the project and international recognition for the qualifications of Filipino mariners.

Established in June 1974, MARINA oversees the development, promotion, and regulation of the maritime industry in the Philippines.

Among its primary objectives is to lead a progressive maritime administration that ensures the safety and security of life and property at sea, protection of the marine environment, and global competitiveness of the Filipino maritime workforce.
