INDIA, a major onion exporter in Asia and the Gulf region, announced a ban on the export of the commodity earlier this month.
The move affected neighbouring countries including the UAE.
The measure which took effect on the 8th of December and will run until March 31, 2024 created an impact on onion exports.
The prices of cooking essentials in the UAE have jumped six times since the ban was imposed.
An expert shared that although China, Iran, Turkiye, and Egypt serve as alternative markets, Indian onions are still the best and most preferred among customers in the Gulf region in terms of quality and quantity.
The ban was imposed to contain local prices in India.
The blanket ban on the export of onions affected not only neighboring nations but also triggered a protest among farmers in the Indian state of Gujarat.
