Rescuers race against time to save workers trapped in Indian tunnel

40 workers are currently trapped inside a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand state after a part of it caved in due to a landslide.

The accident happened on Sunday when a portion of the Silkyara tunnel, around 200 meters away from its opening, collapsed while the 40 workers were inside.

Indian officials have been able to establish contact with the men and have been providing them food, water, and oxygen while they try to get them out of the collapsed tunnel.

A narrow pipeline, which was used to supply water to the tunnel for construction work, is now being used for supplying food, water, and oxygen to the trapped men.

The tunnel is part of the Indian government’s highway project to improve connectivity to pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand.

Officials said they expect to rescue the trapped workers by Tuesday night or Wednesday.
