Russia shifts focus to Germany after Sweden drops Nord Stream probe

KREMLIN spokesman Dmitry Peskov hailed Sweden’s move to end its independent investigation of the Nord Stream pipeline explosions in September 2022.

Peskov called Sweden’s decision as remarkable.

The Russian spokesman said the Kremlin will watch with interest how Germany will handle the case after the Nordic country.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pledged that Russia will be transparent in conducting its own investigation into the explosions.

Swedish officials on Wednesday said they decided to stop the probe due to lack of jurisdiction on the basis that Sweden’s citizens and its national interests were not harmed.

The multiple explosions in September 2022 damaged the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines which supply natural gas to Germany through the Baltic Sea.

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine of sabotaging the multi-billion dollar pipelines but Washington suggested Moscow played a role in staging the attack.
