THE foreign minister of Saudi Arabia has arrived in Damascus for the very first time since the war in Syria began and was received by the Minister of Presidential Affairs of Syria, Mansour Azzam, at Damascus International Airport on Tuesday.
The said visit is a significant development in restoring ties in the region as Syria was suspended from the 22-member Arab League in 2011 following the Syrian government’s crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising which then led to a war.
It can be noted that the warming relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria is also linked to a brokered truce between Saudi Arabia and Iran – a close ally of Syria.
In a Twitter post, the official Twitter account for the presidency of the Syrian Arab Republic said,
“President Bashar al-Assad received Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah, the Saudi Minister of Foreign Affairs at the People’s Palace and discussed with him the relations between the two countries and the bilateral cooperation between Syria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the interest of the two countries and the two brotherly peoples.”
