SINGAPORE’s Health Ministry issued an advisory to its citizens and international travelers in the wake of surging COVID-19 cases.
The ministry revealed it has recorded an estimated 56,043 Covid-19 cases in the week of December 3 to 9 2023 and an increase in daily COVID hospitalizations.
The figure was a significant leap as compared to the 32,035 cases recorded in the previous week.
The majority of the cases in Singapore were linked to the new Omicron subvariant JN.1.
The variant can spread rapidly and evade immunity, making it a global concern, although there is still no clear indication whether it is more transmissible or causes more severe disease as compared to previous variants.
The subvariant has also been detected in the United States, India, and China.
